Paul Heilporn

Paul Heilporn is professor of Papyrology and director of the Institut de Papyrologie at the Université de Strasbourg. He is a member of the research team, UMR 7044 « Archéologie et histoire ancienne : Méditerranée - Europe » (ARCHIMÈDE).

Since completing his doctoral thesis at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (published in 2009: Thèbes et ses taxes. Recherches sur la fiscalité en Égypte romaine (Ostraca de Strasbourg II)), Paul Heilporn has worked on the editing and interpretation of Latin and Greek texts which have been preserved on papyrus and ostraca found in Egypt and dating back around 2,000 years. These texts, of which some belong to the BNU collections, range from tax receipts rooted in commonplace daily affairs to rare historic documents, such as the port of Alexandria’s registry or fragments of Greek literature which have been partially restored and until now, lost. Their publication is contained within the text Source texts and history by the Gisements de textes et histoire de l’équipe Territoires et empires d’Orient (TEO) from the UMR 7044 ARCHIMÈDE.
